Culture is considered a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of phenomena that are transmitted through social learning in human societies. Cultural universals are found in all human societies; these include expressive forms like art, music, dance, ritual, religion, and technologies like tool usage, cooking, shelter, and clothing. The concept of material culture covers the physical expressions of culture, such as technology, architecture and art, whereas the immaterial aspects of culture such as principles of social organization (including practices of political organization and social institutions), mythology, philosophy, literature (both written and oral), and science comprise the intangible cultural heritage of a society. Bali is one of the tourism destination that is close to its culture in terms of religion and others. one of them is the Sanur village, which is very closely related to the traditions in his village such as the Tilem Kajeng ceremony held twice a year. Tilem kajeng is said as the feast of the people of sanur and and in droves to make prayers in the temples to kedewatan sanur. The first day of piodalan at the Jero Gede Sanur temple was always colored by mass disturbances, especially during the ritual after carrying out the melasti to Segara.
melasti is a Balinese Hindu purification ceremony and ritual, which according to Balinese calendar is held several days. It is observed by Hindus in Indonesia, especially in Bali. Melasti was meant as the ritual to cleanse the world from all the filth of sin and bad karma, through the symbolic act of acquiring the Tirta Amerta, "the water of life". The memorial ceremony is held on the edge of the beach with the aim to purify oneself of all the bad things in the past and throw it to the ocean. [In Hindu belief, the source of water such as lake and sea water, are considered as the source of life (Tirta Ameertha). In addition to performing prayers, during the Melasti ceremony, all of sacred objects which belong to a temple, such as pralingga or pratima of Lord Ida Sanghyang Widi Wasa, and all of sacred equipment, are being cleaned and purified.
